Travel hack with house swapping
We are well aware of the high costs we incur when we travel. Travelling domestically and internationally does not come cheap. Travel expenses can quickly add up when we factor in flights, accommodation, food and sightseeing. If you get creative, there are ways to travel on a budget, you just need to know where to look. Doing research online, you can find a lot of affordable packages and sales offered online. You could try visiting your local travel agent to receive up to date information on discounts and promotions.
The majority of travel expense usually goes to transportation, food and accommodation, with transportation and accommodation taking up the bulk of budgeted costs. But what if you could save on these by cutting the amount you may need to spend on your place of stay? What if, you could get your all or part of board and lodging for free during your vacation?
Short Term Rental
The rise of short-stay accommodation businesses such as Airbnb over the last 10 years has been remarkable. This industry is now growing at a faster pace than hotels. These business models and the sharing economy within which it operates provides travelers with more opportunities and authentic experiences of the travel destinations they visit.
Whilst this provides opportunities for travelers there is a downside to this arrangement for an owner, wanting to list their properties on these platforms. Homeowners, rely on the platforms to vet their guests and tenants renting their properties as they do not know the person personally who will be using the apartment. As, you don’t know the person who will be using the apartment. You can never be sure if he/she will take care of it the way you maintain it. Increasingly with the commercialisation of short- term letting, we have seen guests using accommodation as party houses, with little regard for the owner’s belongings. But of course, this is the risk owners take when going into such arrangements
An alternative to Airbnb is house swapping. House swapping has been around for decades and with the focus on short term rental market, this practice has been slowly gaining popularity .
Swapping apartments work simply with two people exchanging apartments maybe for a day or so or it would even go as long as a week or even a month. You for example could be living in New York and you want to go spend some time in California. You may post an ad that you are looking for someone with an apartment in California who wants to spend time in New York. Someone in California may be interested in your proposal, so you make arrangements and voila you got yourself free accommodation.
People doing house swapping to save on accommodation costs and open to anyone who wish to travel despite a modest income. When I first I heard about this, I actually had a hard time believing that people would be willing to do this. But after seeing ads on apartment swapping being posted online, I realised times have changed and it makes economic sense. If you do decide to opt for a house exchange please do take care of the apartment you will be staying in.
With home exchange, you’ll save yourself hundreds of dollars or more if it involves swapping homes with someone in another country. Expect more saving during peak season when prices are premium, and it is hard to find affordable accommodation since a lot of people will be traveling at this time.
